Frequently asked questions.

  • You don’t need to prepare anything or know what to say. Most men I work with start by saying “I don’t even know where to start” That’s totally fine.

My job is to make it easy, comfortable, and useful for you.
This is your space to offload, figure things out, learn some new tools and get practical support without judgment.

  • Not at all, I used to be a Carpenter, and that’s where the name comes from. Whilst I am a men’s counsellor, I am happy to work with anyone who thinks Tradie Therapy will help them. Sometimes depending on the situation, it can be beneficial to work with partners and family members.

  • I only work online, it keeps costs down, makes it easier for both you and I. If you are anywhere in Australia, I can work with you.

  • $80 per session, which are 50min long. I don’t offer concessions or discounts, instead, I have made all sessions as affordable as I can.

  • You can book a session online anytime using the Book Now button.
If you’re unsure or want to have a quick chat first, give me a call or flick me a message, happy to answer any questions. 0428 652 872

  • Counselling isn’t covered by Medicare (yet), but many guys prefer this option because it’s quicker, private, and stays off your medical record.

  • First sessions are paid in advance. After that your card is held securely with Stripe. For all ongoing appointments, payment is processed after your session finishes.

  • No worries, life happens. I just ask for 24 hours’ notice if you need to cancel or reschedule. Less than 24 hours and there’s a $40 cancellation fee. This is so that your appointment can be offered to someone else who needs it

  • I follow strict confidentiality rules as set out by the Australian Counselling Association (ACA), and your privacy is a top priority. There are some situations where this doesn’t apply and will go over this with you in your first appointment.

  • No, I don’t bulk bill or use mental health care plane rebates. This means there’s no referral needed, no GP appointment, no paperwork, and nothing goes on your medical record.

  • Most people think Medicare makes psychology free, but that’s not the full story.

    • Medicare rebate (2025):

      • Clinical Psychologist: $145.25

      • General Psychologist: $98.97

    • Average psychologist consultations are $280 (According to APS)

Which means even with a rebate, you’ll usually pay a gap of $130–$190 per session.

    My fee: $80 per session.
That’s cheaper than the gap you’d normally pay seeing a psychologist with a Mental Health Plan. No referral, no waiting, just straightforward and affordable support.

Important: There are times when you do need a psychologist — for example, if you need a formal diagnosis, specialised assessments, or treatment for complex mental health conditions. If that’s the case, I’ll let you know and point you in the right direction.

  • Since Covid19, there has been an increase in scientific research in how effective online therapy is compared to face to face.
    Studies have found:

    • CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) online works just as well as in person for anxiety and depression.

    • Online counselling can make it easier to attend regularly, since there’s no travel, parking, or waiting rooms.

    • Many people find it more comfortable opening up online, especially from their own space.

    • Lower overheads for therapist, can mean cheaper rates for clients.

    • Face-to-face therapy still has its place, especially for complex cases that need assessments or specialist treatment. But for most people, online therapy delivers the same results with fewer barriers.

  • Yes. If I think you’d be better supported by another professional, I’ll tell you straight.

    • If you need a formal diagnosis, assessments, or specialist treatment. I’ll suggest a psychologist or psychiatrist.

    • If what you’re dealing with is outside my scope, for example, mental illness that is causing dysfunction, crisis, risk of harm to yourself or others, or medical issues.

I don’t believe in holding onto clients just for the sake of it. My job is to give you the best chance of getting back on track, and sometimes that means connecting you with the right service at the right time.

  • Psychologists

    • Are medical professionals

    • Can provide formal diagnosis and assessments (e.g. ADHD, autism, clinical depression).

    • Often work with more complex mental health conditions.

    Counsellors

    • Focus on everyday challenges like stress, anger, relationships, addiction, and life changes.

    • Work with you to set goals, build strategies, and move forward.

    • More affordable (my sessions are $80) and you don’t need a referral or a waiting list.

    Which is right for me?
If you need a diagnosis, specialist treatment, you’ll need a psychologist.
If you want practical support, real conversations, and tools you can start using now, counselling is often the best first step.

And if along the way I think a psychologist is the better fit, I’ll be upfront and help point you in the right direction.

  • Psychotherapists

    • Usually trained to work at a deeper, longer-term level.

    • Often explore childhood, unconscious patterns, and past experiences to understand how they shape you today.

    • Sessions may run for years, focusing on deep personal growth and long-term change.

    Counsellors

    • Focus more on the here and now, what’s happening in your life today and what you want to change.

    • Work with you to set goals, build coping skills, and solve current problems.

    • Often more short-term and practical, giving you tools you can use straight away.

  • That’s up to you and what you are trying to achieve. Generally speaking, I try to focus on what you want to get out of therapy (your goal) and how to get you there. I focus on getting you to your goal, whilst learning new skills and tools. I find that growth happens between sessions, where you can go out and practice what you learnt.

  • Everyone feels like that at first. You don’t need to have the right words or a big story ready, just show up. I’ll guide the chat and make it easy.

  • That’s a tough one, I recommend focusing on what gives your life meaning?
